Redesigning a website without losing Google rankings
A new design can bring more enquiries, but a badly executed redesign can wipe out your Google traffic overnight. The reason is almost always the same: changed page URLs without redirects.
1. An inventory of existing pages
Before the build we list every URL that brings in visitors today, using Search Console and analytics. Those pages must not disappear.
2. Redirects (301)
Every old URL that changes gets a permanent redirect to the new, most similar page. That way Google passes its “trust” to the new site, and visitors don’t end up on a 404 error.
3. Content that works stays
Texts that rank well today can be refreshed, but they shouldn’t be deleted or drastically shortened.
Codema tip Launch a redesign outside your peak season. If something creaks, it is better that it happens when traffic is lower.
4. After launch
- A new sitemap in Search Console.
- Monitoring 404 errors for the first few weeks.
- Comparing traffic and rankings with the period before the redesign.
