Why WordPress is still the best choice for small and medium business websites
When a company decides what to build its website on, the choice is usually between WordPress and a closed platform that promises a site “in an afternoon”. After more than 14 years and over 150 websites, our answer is the same in most cases: WordPress. Here is why, and when it isn’t the right choice after all.
1. The website is truly yours
WordPress is open-source software. The site, its content and database belong to you, and you can move them to any hosting provider or another agency. With closed platforms you pay a monthly subscription for as long as the site exists, and moving often means rebuilding it from scratch.
2. You edit the content yourself
You change texts, images, news and pages through a clear admin panel, without a developer and without waiting. For every site we hand over we also run a short training session, and most clients publish their own news from day one.
3. It grows with your business
The same site can be a five-page business website today, and tomorrow have:
- an online store on WooCommerce, with card payments and shipping,
- multiple languages for customers abroad,
- a partner area or B2B ordering,
- a connection to your accounting or warehouse software.
You don’t have to change platforms when the business grows. You add what you need.
Codema tip Before the build, write a list of what the site should do in two years, not just today. That way the structure and theme are built to handle growth, without an expensive redesign.
4. Good for SEO, if it is built well
WordPress on its own doesn’t guarantee Google rankings, but it gives you everything you need: clean URLs, control over titles and descriptions, a sitemap and speed, as long as the theme isn’t bloated. That is why we build the theme to measure instead of buying a ready-made theme with hundreds of features that slow the site down.
When WordPress isn’t the right choice
If you need a specific application, for example a booking system with complex rules or an internal portal with many user roles, a custom application in Laravel or PHP is often the better solution. We build those projects too, and on the first call we tell you honestly what is more cost-effective.
What to watch out for
- Ready-made themes that do everything look good in the demo but load slowly on mobile.
- Too many plugins mean more room for bugs and security holes.
- A site without maintenance becomes vulnerable within a year. Updates aren’t optional.
Conclusion
For most small and medium businesses WordPress offers the best balance of price, freedom and room to grow. The condition is that the site is built and maintained properly. If you are not sure what is right for you, get in touch for a free estimate.
